Chapter Four: (excerpt)
Eventually, the pack brought down a deer. I heard my father’s call from a great distance away just as the sun was setting. I struggled to my feet and lumbered in that direction. Every few minutes, Zoe would howl. I knew she worried for me; I could hear it in her voice. The longer it took for me to reach them, the more anxious she became. Ignoring the pain in my side, I began to trot.
The sun had long set by the time I reached them. Zoe ran up to me, whining and licking my face. Her enthusiastic welcome momentarily distracted me from the disapproving stares of the rest of the pack. Thor came up next. Although he didn’t greet me as Zoe did, he did tip his head at me.
